Pirongia’s Attractions

Mount Pirongia (959 Metres) is an ancient volcano and is the centrepiece of a large Forest Park of 17,000 Hectares.Pirongia Forest Park is home to many species of native plants and birds and several walking tracks crisscross the park, varying in length from 1 hour to 11 hours. Horse treks and four-wheel farmbike tours are also available.

You can find out more about the area at Pirongia Historic Visitor Centre, browse local paintings, prints, silk scarves and jewellery at Baffin Street Art Gallery or the Pirongia Art & Craft Gallery, or view fine woodwork at the Wood Turning Gallery. Highgate Country Garden is worth a visit, and for equine lovers, Pirongia Clydesdales allows you to see up close this unique breed. Pirongia Craft Day is a treasure trove (last sunday of every month).

Pirongia also boasts an 18 hole golf course and tennis courts for raising the heart rate, and in the village you’ll find a licenced hotel, cafes, garage (service station), and mini supermarket.

The famous Waitomo Caves are only 30 minutes south of Somersal B&B & are well worth the trip.
