Somersal is an idyllic tree filled retreat perched on the banks of the Waipa River in the central Waikato. As well as hosts John and Jenny Mortland, the farm is home to several dozen cows and sheep. The cows are used to close contact with people, and it is a fantastic chance for children (or any visitor) to meet these quiet and good natured animals up close.

The house is ringed by the lush garden, while the grounds and farm buildings are perched on a terrace with paddocks descending the slope to the Waipa river. Here you can stroll along on bankside walks and enjoy the solitude, take a slow float downstream in an inflatable tube, or cast off and try to land one of the wily trout that frequents its stretches.
